TAINAN MAY JAM
Since it's early beginnings in 1999, the Tainan May Jam has been a free-spirited grassroots festival since it began. With the intention of cultivating a music friendly environment in southern Taiwan, organizer Alex Schunn of the folky rock band Charlie Swiggs opened the beaches of the historic Anping District of Tainan to bands and music lovers. With no focus on genre, the May Jam has seen a diverse number of bands play over the years including local pop punk band SM, Taichung funksters Milk, smooth indie group New Hong Kong Hair City, expat punks Divebomb and of course Charlie Swiggs among many, many others. Originally held in July, then June, the festival kept getting pushed up because of Taiwan's notorious summer typhoons. The Tainan May Jam has been billed as a laid back barbecue with live music type of event and has usually been free to the public. However, in recent years the organizers have asked a small entrance fee to join the festivities.
