In the Fall of 2004, legendary Taiwanese rocker Wu Bai decided to throw a music fest with the intention of creating a platform for indie artists while getting younger audiences to hear his classic taike rock sounds. The two day affair was held at the Huashan Culture Center, a venue that would later become home to numerous independent music, art and culture events. Various labels and indie ventures including Fei Records and the Swingjack collective set up booths at the entrance engaging concertgoers as they entered the stage area. For two days, diverse bands including punk girls B.B. Bomb, electronica unit Varo, electro-metal project Sister White and aboriginal folk artists like Panai followed each other on stage until the UbU Festival culminated with Wu Bai and his backing band China Blue. UbU was a call for those in the independent arts community to "Be Yourself."
