Consisting of members of the influential protest group Labor Exchange, The Hohak Band plays with their native Hakka folk style by fusing it with other world music like jazz, rock and West African blues. The band is known for incorporating traditional instrumentation including the oboe-like suona and Chinese violin or erhu, native choruses and even rapping in their repertoire of original songs and traditional Hakka covers. Their Hohak Carnival album, released on Taiwan Colors Music, has received various awards on Taiwan as well as international attention.
Hohak translates as "Good to Guests" which is consistent with their live performance whether it's at a large festival like Ho-Hai-Yan or folk event at The Wall. In 2006 The Hohak Band were invited to the MIDEM Festival in Cannes, France to join Taiwan Beat!, a showcase for Taiwanese artists also featuring DJ Lim Giong and black metal group Chthonic. For some fun folk music with modern coloring, The Hohak Band is sure to entertain.
