Born of the Puyama and Amis aboriginal peoples of Taiwan, Panai is a unique singer-songwriter that has blended her native melodies with modern acoustic folk guitar. Her powerful songs about her experiences with travel and everyday life appeal to fans of Tracy Chapman and Michelle Shocked making her a prominent figure not only among folk fans, but also the indie crowd. Panai has released several solo albums and collaborations on the local folk-oriented label Taiwan Colors Music.
While playing folk events around Taiwan, Panai often appears at the Witch House in Taipei. In 2004, she joined the UbU indie fair at the Huashan Culture Center sharing a stage with diverse indie bands like B.B. Bomb and Varo as well as superstars like China Blue. With Taiwanese aboriginal music getting more global attention, Panai is a good start if you are interested in this folk music phenomenon.
